Competition Result: Wyboston Seniors (Home) vs Colmworth Seniors. 17th August 2022

Interclub match played 17th August.

Before I went out today I said a silent prayer asking the good Lord to spare us from the rain and my prayer was answered.

The course is still as ‘dry as a chip’ but the greens are playing well thanks to the efforts of Lee and his team.

Wyboston were looking to avenge the 5 – 1 ‘hammering’ they received at Colmworth earlier in the season and ‘by heck’ they did just that. Wyboston won the day 5 ½ to ½  which included some big wins, once again on paper Colmworth were the stronger of the teams but as in previous matches Wyboston players rose to the challenge, congratulation team.

The N.T.P’s were won by John Day (CNB) on the 5th and John Harrison on the 13th .

Our next club match is on Monday 6th September away to Pavenham, currently this is very under subscribed, if you’re available please sign up. It’s unfortunate that this date clashes with the Ladies away weekend so a fewer number of ladies will be available. It’s time to step up to the mark gents.

Ron Harris (Acting Captain on the day)

Competition Result: Wyboston Seniors vs Brampton Seniors, 12th August 2022

Interclub match played 12th August 2022

Brampton Seniors v Wyboston Seniors is always a keenly fought match and today’s was no different. Unfortunately today, Wyboston lost 3 ½ to 2 ½ , not a disaster bearing in mind how difficult Brampton is as a golf course.

The weather was very hot and the fairways were ‘bone’ dry, the dryness of the fairways gave plenty of run on the ball but also made it difficult to judge distances but we all got safely round.

The 1st hole at Brampton must be one of the most testing on any course in the area. A narrow shot into the green, water (well, dried up ponds) surrounding the green and trees everywhere, a brutal start to your round.

It was also nice to meet our ‘old buddy’ Dave Cook, formally of Wyboston who now plays out of Brampton. Unfortunately he won his match!

Once again the hospitality shown to us today was first class as was the lunch of Lasagne (no peas)!

Our next match is a home match on Wednesday against Colmworth, the weather forecasters are suggesting rain early next week, please Lord, not on Wednesday!

Once again, thank you Wyboston team for playing and representing the Club on a truly scorching day.

Ron Harris, Acting Captain

Competition Result: Wyboston Seniors vs Mount Pleasant Seniors. 10th August 2022

Interclub match

Played 10th August 2022

There was a bit of emotion in todays match at Mount Pleasant as this was the last match between both clubs. For those that don’t know, Mount Pleasant golf course has been sold for residential development and will cease to exist from March 2024.

The new 18 hole course is made up of 2 distinct halves, the original  9 holes, with the odd change and the new 9. I know it’s been dry for what appears to be forever but the new holes are in an awful condition, no words can describe how bad this part of the course is. The sun shone today and at times it was incredibly hot and according to the forecast it’s going to be even hotter for our next match on Friday at Brampton, bring it on.

Despite the hot weather and the poor course conditions  Wyboston won the day 3 ½ to 2 ½, well done team.

Mount Pleasant’s hospitality is always first class and their catering is excellent and they excelled today in both. Please Wyboston catering look and learn.

Competition Result: Seniors Day Game – Blind Pairs. 27th July 2022

Played 27th July 2022

Stableford Blind Pairs

Match Report

With no inter club fixture today there was a much better turnout for the senior day game with 29 players enjoying a warm July day in the sun.

We are getting used to the hard fairways, which is great…..if you can keep it straight. If not, it just goes further and further into trouble. Some players managed that better than others today and there were some very good scores. Unfortunately that doesn’t always mean a prize and my very able assistant was not kind to some when drawing the pairs.

Highest score of the day was Terry Stenchen with 43 points. Lucky for Terry that he came out of the hat with Ken Gray who scored 36 points – enough to take the top prize with 79 points.

Second with 77 points were Ron Harris (37) and Nigel Samm (40)

Third with 76 points were Ray Clark (41) and Mick Searle (35)

Congratulations to the winners – prizes when I next see you.

NTP on the 3rd was won by………….me.

Next Wednesday is the August monthly medal.

The next senior day game is Wednesday 10th August – stableford / count your putts. Entry sheet on the board and spaces available.

Please note that as from 1st August, the earliest tee for any senior event is 7.34am.

Time to enjoy my prize – “fruity & smoky”…..interesting combination.

Competition Result: Harris Thornhill Trophy. 25th July 2022

Played 25th July.

Battle of ther sexes. Matchplay competition.

The Ladies winning team
Ron Harris presents the Harris Thornhill Trophy to the Captain of the winning team, Anne March

Match Report

“Like lambs to the slaughter” the men’s team turned up assuming they had a chance of winning this years match, bearing in mind the ladies had won 4 of the previous 6 encounters, dream on!

The weather was fine, all be it there was a strong wind and the fairways were ‘rock hard’, this favoured the lady golfers (I’m desperately looking for excuses).

As the results came in , it became obvious that the men were again in for a ‘tubbing’ and that is exactly what they got.

Congratulations to Anne March and her team on a great win and a most enjoyable match. Not only did the ladies win the match but they also won the 2 N.T.P’s ‘Dinks’ on the 3rd and Anne M. on the 13th  it really was a bad day for the men.

Presentations took places following the after match lunch, hopefully photographs of the presentation accompany this report and it is hoped that next years match will be as enjoyable as this years.

Competition Result: Wyboston Seniors vs Pavenham Seniors 13th July 2022

Event played on 13th July, Format: 4 ball better ball

Match Report

Today promised to be rather warm, it certainly was for Pavenham seniors. Once again, on the basis of the H.I. Pavenham were the stronger team but as before Wyboston rose to the challenge and won the day 5 games to 1. Well done team.

The N.T.P’s were won by Brian Bolton (Pavenham) on the 5th and Ron Harris (Wyboston) on the

13th, how that happened nobody knows as his ball was at least 30 feet from the pin. I think the truth was that nobody wanted to win the bottle of white wine that was on offer!

The course played very well, a little ‘scorched’ in places but other than that very good, thanks go to Lee and his team.

John Clarke once again acted as a target for one of the visiting golfers. I nearly de-capitated him some weeks ago but today he actually got hit by the ball! My advice John is to keep on the move, it’s more difficult to hit a moving target!

We look forward to visiting Pavenham in September, get ready team for ‘slick’ greens.

A request to all golfers. There are several entry sheets on the notice board, please sign up, you’re involvement is essential to the future of the section.

Ron (Acting Captain on the day).
